Designing a lead magnet people actually keep
Most downloadable PDFs are read once and never opened again. The ones that survive are built to be screenshotted.
The standard advice for building an email list is to offer a free download. The standard result is a twenty-page PDF that gets opened once, skimmed, and never seen again, which does nothing for the relationship it was supposed to start.
We built one recently for a client project and made a different set of choices. The brief was two pages, not twenty, and the design target was not the printed page.
Design for the screenshot
Almost nobody prints these. What they do, if it is any good, is screenshot one section and keep it in their photo roll, or send it to somebody who needs it.
That changes the layout entirely. Every unit has to be self-contained, because it will be cropped away from its context. Type has to hold up at phone-screen scale rather than at reading distance on paper. And the value has to be findable in seconds, since a screenshot is taken in a hurry.
The practical version: short blocks, each complete on its own, with the single most useful line in each block visually dominant.
Invert the palette for print
The brand for this project is a dark ground with a light accent, which is right on screen and wrong for a document. A full-bleed dark page costs a fortune in ink, prints muddy on a home printer, and looks worse than the screen version it came from.
We inverted it: light ground, dark text, accent unchanged. Recognisably the same brand, cheap to print, and legible when screenshotted in bright light. If you produce a downloadable in a dark theme, check what your print dialogue does with background graphics before you ship it.
Say exactly what the source says
The download accompanies a video, and every line on it appears verbatim in that video's script rather than paraphrased.
This is not laziness. Someone who watches and then downloads will have both open, and a paraphrase reads as a discrepancy. It also gives you one place to make corrections: change the script, change the card, and the two never drift apart.
Keep the framing that makes it safe
The subject matter sits adjacent to a sensitive field, and the source material carried two deliberate pieces of framing: a note that a single instance of any pattern means nothing, and a closing line pointing anyone in a genuinely difficult situation toward proper help.
It would have been easy to cut both for space, since neither is the exciting content. They are the difference between a useful tool and an alarming one, and a standalone document needs them more than the video does, because a card gets shared without the context that surrounded it.
Build the delivery before the traffic
A download only builds a list if something captures the address. A public link is a file, not a lead magnet.
Keep the file outside your public directory and serve it from a short-lived signed URL after confirmation. That does not stop determined redistribution, and nothing does. What it stops is the public URL quietly becoming the funnel, which is the failure mode that actually happens.
We build this kind of thing for a living.
